Anwar virtually blacked out in mainstream media

If an alien from another planet were to check out the mainstream media coverage of the general election campaign, he or she would not know that a person by the name of Anwar Ibrahim existed.

It appears that the mainstream media have virtually blacked out the opposition icon from their coverage of the election campaign. Anwar has been instrumental in forging closer cooperation among the various opposition parties and ensuring one-to-one contests.

Some analysts believe the media, especially television stations, have been told not to portray the opposition in a favourable light. Anwar especially appears to be the target of a complete blackout.

This has prompted an angry reaction from Anwar, who told ABC News:

Anwar says the vote will be flawed and media coverage of the election has been totally unbalanced.

"Do you know that not one report about me in the media, in the government-controlled media or an entire mainstream media in this country," he said.

"There's a complete ban, a blackout, and yet you call it free and fair elections."

The so-called blackout of Anwar is his own doing and PKR. We often read Anwars’s news via the foreign wired agencies (if there are made available to you) or through a paid subscription at Malaysiakini. The release of the 3rd Segment of the Lingam Video Clip is a classic example. One would have expected the hot news be available at his website or at PKR but there is nothing. Can you image having to get a subscription to read a free press release from Anwar?.

On March 1st 08, Google for “PKR website” and what you get is “Transkrip Perbualan Telefon VK Lingam PDF dated 18 September 2007. Pick on the English Section and we see an outdated Media Statement by Syed Husin: BN Changes Superficial; Abdul Rashid should resign over comments, dated 23 Februari 2008. and a 2nd Media Statement
Anwar: Dissolution of Parliament No Surprise PDF dated 13 Februari 2008

The site is devoid of what is currently happening at PKR and only at Anwar Ibrahim’s website, can we find uploaded recorded video clips of his incomplete ceremahs. And mostly in BM version. There is not a single report on ANY other PKR candidate or about ANY other activity undertaken by PKR during this GE 2008 except the official Manifesto.
In short it is short of funds and resources and even unable to have full time staff to co-ordinate its news and information. Tian Chua is supposed to be the Info Chief, but we have not heard a squeak from him at the PKR site except at his personal website where once in a blue moon he would say something.
So why complain about blackout when no information is dished out? Do you expect reporters or for that matter bloggers to view through all the loaded video clips and get stories from them.
It is so disappointing getting info from PKR or to cover any of its stories; no one seems to be in charge and emails left are never answer. So All I can say is that there are a lot of hot air in PKR
