Army to help maintain law and order in Malaysia? PDF Print E-mail
Thursday, 03 July 2008 23:11
Inspector General of Police Musa Hassan's suggestion yesterday that the military could be asked to help the police in maintaining law and order in the country is disturbing.

For one thing, Aliran wonders whether the security of the nation now has become unstable to the point that it warrants military intervention. Or is this merely a tactical move to scare ordinary Malaysians from exercising their right to express their stand in public through, for instance, peaceful demonstrations on the street?

Civilian matters should be handled by the police force in the most professional way possible because as the experience of neighbouring countries has shown, once out of the military barracks, the army may find it difficult to return.

The IGP's remarks may only add fuel to the speculation that given the twists of events in the political sphere, the country may be put under emergency rule.

These are very worrying times. I fear that those in power will do anything to hang on it. They have everthing to fearful about and nothing to lose. I am apprehensive but will not be surprized if the they engineer events to enable them to invoke Emergency Rule and begin a massive crackdown of disent among the populus and incasterate the leaders. Hope to Good , I am wrong!

  • pah eng cheong  - emergency rule

Before this happen, I strongly feel that our Agong should publicize his advise(s) precisely to the PM to do the neccessary inorder to calm the public.

It is very strange that the IGP is or may recommend the military to help in the peacekeeping of the Malaysian public.

This reveals that the IGP has lost credibility and he is not in command of the Police Force. He should immediately resign and hand over to a capable person who can lead the Police force.

Balasubramaniam, SD declarations reveals that he should be investigated. As he is an interested party and until he is cleared he should be suspended.

Strange too is that our PM seems to be oblivion of the happenings around him and has no idea of what he should be doing. As usual he is either 'listening' attentively or sleeping.

i don\'t blame the igp/ag or any of the \'powerful forces\' for whatever evils they have done. these s******* are just the mahchais of the pee-em\'s admin. they are his cronies too. the govt put them there to do the dirty job.

the only thing left in their souls is conscience (if there are any).

if only their actions and behaviour are guided by conscience (god\'s way) then there is still hope..i believe.

dragging the army in for what? your call..

  • aling  - rakyat yang tentukan

rakyat dah tentukan nasib mereka sendiri masa pilihanraya yang lepas... orang melayu masih tak sedar lagi mengapa kita perlu perkukuhkan hubungan...raja nazrin dah banyak kali bertitah satukan melayu...akibatnya sudah nampak sekarang ini...

  • VS  - Malaysia no longer belongs to Malaysian

I always believed that every country would have their dark secret but ours seems to be shine in the public and in the eyes of the world. I personally have gone thru 3 prime minister, Pak Lah is the third for me and I felt very and deeply disappointed as a malaysian citizen. Not only he did not bring growth to the country, instead he puts us all in huge DEBTS! Fuel price went up, toll price went up, crime rate went up...eventually everything went up! I was wondering which University he goes to? Or did he ever gone to any?
I am not a reformist but till this stage WE as a citizen DEMAND Badawi to step down immediately to avoid further damages to the country.
I have no interest in politics and I am only an employee on a big company which earns about RM6,000 per month but I realized our ringgit value has gone down drastically! Thanks but no thanks to you...BADAWI!

i think the military (MAF) is more than capable in handling public order if the need is arise. they have done a good job in assisting the police in combating insurgency which is a responsibility of the police. Let me remind you here that MAF is not power crazy as being potrayed here like the term used \" difficult to return\". if you look at the history, MAF has got an opportunity to grab the power that that was offered in 1969 but refused and maintain as a professional soldier which is subservient to democratic government. However after looking at the current security situation in the country that may affect the country security perimeter, the military involvement might be a good lesson to teach some good b***** out there
