Aliran merasa terkejut oleh respons Dr Mahathir terhadap luahan marah
beberapa golongan ekoran dari pendedahan Peguam Negara bahawa kumpulan
siasatan khas (KSK) polis tidak dapat mengenal pasti orang-orang yang
menyerang Anwar Ibrahim
.Sebagai Menteri Dalam Negeri, Mahathir seharusnya berasa malu kerana KSK
tidak menjalankan tugasnya untuk menyoal selidik pegawai kanan kementerian
tersebut dan pegawai polis yang berkaitan dengan insiden ini, dan juga
kerana Peguam Negara tidak berbuat apa-apa terhadap penemuan KSK selama
hampir enam minggu.
Pada awal lagi, kita harus sedari bahawa hanya pegawai kanan sahaja yang
akan berani menyentuh Anwar Ibrahim. Tiada pegawai yang berpangkat rendah
yang akan mengambil risiko kerjayanya untuk menyerang Anwar. Oleh itu
kenapa KSK membuang masa merakamkan kenyataan dari 63 orang pegawai polis
bawahan tanpa menyoal pegawai kanan pada peringkat awalnya?
Rakyat Malaysia, pada mulanya, percayai bahawa pihak polis bertangungjawab
terhadap pukulan ke atas Anwar. Hanya Mahathir yang mencurigai hal ini,
dan dengan nada sinis mendakwa kemungkinan Anwar mencedera dirinya
sendiri.
Beliau tanpa teragak-agak memberitahu sekumpulan audiens di Tokyo, "Kami
tidak melayani banduan sebegitu." Oleh kerana sekarang telah dibuktikan
bahawa polis bertanggungjawab melayani Anwar "sebegitu", beliau, sebagai
Menteri Dalam Negeri, dan juga Ketua Polis Negara perlu
dipertanggungjawabkan atas kekejaman polis tersebut.
Bila beliau mengumumkan penubuhan KSK, banyak kumpulan telah menyarankan
sebuah suruhanjaya penyiasatan yang benar-benar bebas. Sekarang, selepas
tiga bulan, dia berkata, "Jika ini keinginan mereka, saya akan
menelitinya. Saya belum memikirkan hal ini lagi." Apa lagi yang hendak
"ditelitikan"? Jika beliau berminat untuk mendirikan kebenaran dan
membersihkan nama polis, dia harus menubuhkan sebuah suruhanjaya
penyiasatan serta merta yang terdiri dari hakim yang telah bersara dan
tiada penglibatan polis.
"Kita tidak boleh menyalahkan angkatan polis disebabkan beberapa orang,"
kata Mahathir seakan-akan serius. Nama angkatan polis akan dicemari selagi
beberapa orang yang terlibat dalam kekerasan tersebut tidak dikenalpasti
dan didakwa. Selagi Mahathir melambatkan proses ini, selagi itulah
diamenggalakkan imej polis—dan juga negara—dicemari.
Jika mereka yang terlibat dalam hal kekerasan terhadap Anwar tidak
dikenalpasti pada 31 Januari, Mahathir dan Peguam Negara hanya mempunyai
satu pilihan: mereka mesti letak jawatan pada 1 Februari.

Identify who assaulted Anwar by 31 January or resign
Aliran is flabbergasted by Dr Mahathir’s response to the outrage expressed by various groups following the Attorney General’s disclosure that the police special investigating team (SIT) was unable to identify Anwar Ibrahim’s assailants.
As Home Minister, he should be ashamed that SIT was just sitting around without questioning top home ministry and police officials over the incident and that the Attorney-General was sitting on SIT’s findings for almost six weeks.
From the onset, it should have been obvious that only a top official would have dared to touch Anwar Ibrahim. No petty official would have risked his career by assaulting Anwar. Why then did SIT waste its time recording statements from 63 relatively junior police personnel without questioning the top officers first?
From the beginning, Malaysians were convinced that the police were responsible for beating up Anwar. Only Mahathir was sceptical about it and cynically suggested that the injuries could have been self-inflicted.
He even had the temerity to tell an audience in Tokyo, "We do not treat our prisoners like that." Now that it has been proven that the police are responsible for treating Anwar "like that", he, as Home Minister, and the Inspector General of Police should be held accountable for police brutality.
When he announced the setting up of SIT, many groups called for a truly independent commission of inquiry. Now, three months later, he says, "if this is their desire, then I will have to study it¼I haven’t thought about it." What is there to ‘study’? If he is interested in establishing the truth and clearing the name of the police, he should immediately set up a truly independent commission comprising retired judges with no police involvement.
"We can’t blame the whole police force just because of a few," said Mahathir sanctimoniously. The whole police force will be tainted and tarnished until the few are identified and charged with criminal assault and battery. The longer Mahathir drags his feet, the more he is deliberately encouraging the image of the police - and of the country - to be dragged through the mud.
If those responsible for assaulting Anwar cannot be identified by 31 January, then Mahathir and the Attorney General have only one honourable option: they should RESIGN on 1 February.
